An extension to an existing cottage on a generational farm near Bairnsdale, in East Gippsland. The new design creates a comfortable home that is perfectly suited to aging-in-place, with each room filled with warm Northern sunlight, and expansive window openings that look out over distant and active areas of the property. The brief outlined a need for entertaining, both intimate groups and large gatherings with family and friends. The main living area is centred around their existing 4m long table, built by the client. The master bedroom wing provides some separation from the main action of the house, and a slim passageway connects the new cottage with the old, while creating a line-of-sight for supervising the grandchildren. Externally, the house is wrapped in wide eaves to shield the harsh summer sunlight, and openable doors and windows have been precisely located for cross-ventilation and to capture the familiar cooling breezes. |
